A guide to rechargeable batteries - Pocket Change Shopping Blog ...

Panasonic rechargeable batteries. sealed rechargable batteries

Most electronic gadgets that we use these days run on batteries. Sure they give you the option of portability but as users you do tend to incur recurring costs of the batteries they use. This is where rechargeable batteries make a world of difference.

Batteries are used in so many gadgets like remote controls, cameras and portable radios. Using rechargeable batteries for all your electronic gadgets does have quite a few advantages to it. One of the first and probably the most important advantage with rechargeable batteries is that they are better for the environment. All batteries whether rechargeable or not are quite harmful for the environment when disposed. Rechargeable batteries don?t need to be disposed often as they can be recharged numerous times before being disposed off.

The next biggest advantage with rechargeable batteries is the fact that it is a lot more economical. Rechargeable batteries may have a high initial cost but they make up for the additional cost as they can be recharged hundreds of times. This way you will end up saving quite a lot of money in the long run. Rechargeable batteries usually last for a year or maybe more which makes them a no brainer for electronics like your remote or portable radio.

Manufacturers like Panasonic are known to provide top notch rechargeable batteries for their cameras and video cameras. These batteries can be recharged thousands of times before you need to get another one. Panasonic rechargeable batteries like the DMW-BLD10 are long lasting and are perfect for the Lumix line of cameras.

With the advantages of rechargeable batteries becoming well known you have quite a few sealed rechargeable batteries which are used for varied applications. These could be used as emergency lights, or uninterrupted power supply units and many more. These batteries are quite safe to use and have a long useful life. They are quite safe for the environment as well.

Three Berry Pie with Brown Sugar Topping from Tv Food and Drink ...

I didn?t intend for this to be the pie I made to celebrate having to put my cat to sleep, but that?s the way it turned out.

Z had been back and forth to the vet for about a week, and the ultimate diagnosis was a cyst inside his intestine which would most likely have just grown back had I spent the several thousand dollars on surgery to have it removed. ?His disposition in that week had altered itself from playful and relaxed to sullen and despondent. He wasn?t eating or drinking, and he couldn?t use his box. ?It was clear he could not find a comfortable position for himself to rest.

I started this pie in the late afternoon, while wallowing in denial over what would have to be done. ?Michael arrived later in the evening and talked me back into reality. ?Without being able to use his box, there wasn?t a lot of time for Z. ?None of us were benefitting from delay. ?So after a few more crying sessions, I finally caved and said to Michael between sniffles, ?Ok? let me just get this pie out of the oven, and while it?s cooling we?ll take Z in, and then when we get back we can eat it.?

I understand dividing my attentions between a dying cat and a three berry pie with brown sugar topping might seem a bit coarse. ?But once I had accepted what needed to be done for Z, it was no longer tough for me. ?We had shared fourteen years of companionship and he?d been content and healthy through all of it. Below is the last picture we took of him. ?The heart sleeve on his paw is covering up the IV that was delivering the dose that would move him on. ?He was at ease all the way through the end, purring and nuzzling me. ?I could not have asked for a better end for him.

It?s been over a month now, and I?m starting to hear the call of kittens at the Saturday afternoon pet adoption fairs outside the Petco on Sunset. ?But I?ll hold off a while longer.

And we did go back home that night and eat the pie. ?We topped it with ice cream. We each had two giant slices. ?At his peak, Z weighed approximately 19 pounds, so I?m sure he would have wanted nothing else for us.

Three Berry Pie with Brown Sugar Topping
Adapted from Food Network Magazine ?July August 2012, page 82

For the Dough:

  • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 10 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 2-4 Tbsps ice water

For the Filling:

  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 2 cups strawberries, husked and quartered (or halved)
  • 2 cups blackberries
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 2 wide strips lemon zest
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 3 Tbsps flour
  • 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt

For the Topping:

  • 3/4?cup coarsely chopped almonds, walnuts or hazelnuts, toasted
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 4 Tbsps unsalted butter, melted
  • pinch of salt

Additional:

  • pie weights or dried beans to serve as pie weights

Make the dough: ? Pulse the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, vinegar, salt, and about 1/3 the butter in a food processor until the butter is incorporated. ?Add the remaining butter and pulse until it is in pea-size pieces.

Add 2 tablespoons ice water and pulse until the dough just comes together. ?Pinch a small piece of dough. ?If it doesn?t hold together, add up to 2 more tablespoons of ice water, pulsing 1 tablespoon at a time.

Turn the dough out onto a large piece of plastic wrap and press into a ball. ?Pat into a 1/2 inch disk and wrap tightly. ?Refrigerate until firm, at least one hour.

Once firm, roll the dough into a 12-inch round on a lightly floured surface or between 2 pieces of lightly floured parchment paper?(if the dough becomes soft, refrigerate again until firm). ?Center the dough in a 9-inch pie plate. ?Fold the overhang under itself and crimp the edges. ?Refrigerate 3o minutes.

Preheat oven to 350? F.

Lightly pierce the bottom and sides of the crust with a fork, then line with parchment paper or foil and fill with pie weights or dried beans. ?Bake 20 minutes, then remove the parchment and weights and continue baking until lightly golden, about 10 more minutes. ?Transfer to a rack and let cook completely.

Meanwhile, make the filling: Bring 1 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of strawberries and 1 cup of blackberries along with 1/2 cup granulated sugar and the lemon zest to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat, crushing the berries slightly with a wooden spoon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until reduced by half, about 20 minutes. Discard the lemon zest. Transfer the berry mixture to a bowl, stir in the remaining 3 cups of berries and 1/4 cup granulated sugar, the lemon juice, the flour, nutmeg and salt. Let cool completely.

For the Topping: ?Combine the nuts, brown sugar, flour, butter and salt. ?Squeeze the mixture into clumps with your hands and scatter on a baking sheet. ?Freeze for 30 minutes.

Increase the oven temperature to 375? F. ?Pour the cooled berry filling into the crust and top with the frozen crumb topping. ?Transfer to a baking sheet and bake until the filling is bubbly and the topping is golden brown, 45 to 55 minutes. ?(If the topping browns too quickly, cover it with foil).

Transfer the pie to a rack and cool overnight, or at least 4 hours, so the filling sets ?(We didn?t do that. ?We?re not sadists. ?We let it cool an hour. ?It was fine).

Self-immolations speak of Israel's bankruptcy

"...Israel's economy isn't experiencing delightful days. The mass protests in Tel Aviv and other cities relate the bitter story of Israel's failed economy. Perhaps it might be better for the Israeli leaders to deal with their people's problems and think of solutions to get out of the current crisis rather than pulling out all the stops to suppress a defenseless, besieged people in Gaza, kill the innocent Palestinian children and women and design malicious ploys to attack Syria and Iran."

In the past weeks, the streets of Tel Aviv have been witness to desperate people setting themselves on fire in protest at the growing social and economic inequalities and the rising cost of living in Israel.

Almost one year after 400,000 Israelis filled Tel Aviv?s Rothschild Boulevard in protest at the increasing economic difficulties, a wave of civil unrest and upsurges is again encompassing the state. The latest victim of the protests was the 57-year-old Moshe Silman, a disabled war veteran who sustained severe injuries after setting himself ablaze at a bus stop near Tel Aviv on July 14.

The death of Silman ignited widespread anger and frustration among the Israelis who have poured into the streets of Tel Aviv en masse since early July to call on the government to meet their socioeconomic demands in the light of the unprecedented recession and economic crisis in Europe.

New York Times wrote that many people have compared Silman to the Tunisian fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi whose committing suicide on January 4, 2011 became the preface to the Tunisian Revolution and the wider Arab Spring which totally transformed the political equations in the Middle East. However, the chained self-immolations in the past weeks in Israel are not exceptional. Although few may remember the tragic event, back in July 2004, an Israeli citizen named Mordehai Cohen set himself on fire in protest at the rejection of work license.

Moshe Silman was formerly a businessman, working in a messenger service; however, as the media reported, his business plummeted following the Second Intifada and his being unable to pay back the debt of the National Insurance Institute caused his homelessness. Irritated and hopeless, he set himself on fire, and a few days after the doctors said that 92 percent of his body had burnt, he passed away.

Before committing suicide, Silman wrote a letter, part of which reads, "I have no money for medicine or rent. I can?t make the money after I have paid my millions in taxes I did the army, and until age 46 I did reserve duty. I refuse to be homeless; this is why I am protesting."

The other case of self-immolation in Israel took place when the 40-year-old Akiva Mafa'i who was identified as a 25 percent Israel Defense Force (IDF) veteran fired himself in an excruciating manner. The Defense Ministry denied that his self-immolation had any connection with his status as a military veteran, but his brother thinks differently. He says that IDF behaves toward the war veterans apathetically and indifferently, paying no attention to the fact that they have sacrificed themselves to "contribute to the state."

Israel's economic woes and popular protests at the deteriorating social, political and economic situation of the regime is nothing new. Financial hardships and increasing gap between the rich and poor in Israel have ignited widespread protests since last year. It can be said that Israel's reliance on the United States and EU's ailing economy has dragged it into the current crisis. EU considers Israel a "privileged partner." EU is Israel's first trade partner and in 2011, the bilateral trade between the two sides amounted to approximately ? 29.4 billion.

But the economic indicators don't carry promising news for Israel. As of December 31, 2010, Israel's external debt revolved around USD 89 billion which roughly constituted 43% of Israel's total GDP.

According to New Israel Fund, 20 percent of the Israeli citizens and one in three children live below the poverty line.

On July 24, the Israeli media published a report that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded an increase in the taxes and a considerable cut in the budget so as to prevent Israel's economy from sliding into a more debilitating crisis.

Israel is sinking in poverty and foreign debt while its hawkish leaders spend lavishly on military equipments and buying state-of-the-art weaponry from different countries.

According to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPR), Israel is the 18th country of the world in terms of military expenditure. This is while it receives an annual USD 3.09 billion from the United States in military assistance. And just recently, it was reported that the U.S. President Barack Obama has signed into law a U.S. Congress bill that allows the government to gives Israel another USD 70 million in military assistance.

All in all, Israel's economy isn't experiencing delightful days. The mass protests in Tel Aviv and other cities relate the bitter story of Israel's failed economy. Perhaps it might be better for the Israeli leaders to deal with their people's problems and think of solutions to get out of the current crisis rather than pulling out all the stops to suppress a defenseless, besieged people in Gaza, kill the innocent Palestinian children and women and design malicious ploys to attack Syria and Iran.?

Techniques For Preparing Sailing Family Vacations | Travel & Leisure

There are a number of various kinds of sailing vacations that you can enjoy. Planning for a sailing vacation however, can be a little bit overwhelming and this post will discuss a few tips and guidelines in order to make the planning procedure a little bit easier.

Plan a trip with other holiday makers that have exactly the same objective that you do If you are a new comer to sailing vacations or if you are on a limited budget then it would be a good idea to plan to enjoy the sailing vacation along with other holiday makers who are also looking to enjoy the exact same kind of experience that you are. You?ll be able to learn from fellow guests as well as the crew on board the vessel.

Deciding whether or not to charter a vessel One of the most attractive choices when it comes to sailing vacations would be to charter a vessel and be able to sail the vessel out on the water your self. There?s quite a lot of fun as well as adventure to be had when choosing this option. Having the ability to charter a vessel and also enjoy the waters with a few friends and family or simply on your own is a truly unforgettable experience. However, it is very important to take factors such as your level of experience, skill as well as confidence into account prior to renting a boat.

Booking the luxury boat as well as crew This really is one of the most costly sailing holiday options. Yachts are very large and have all of the crew, supplies as well as amenities you have to enjoy expended sailing vacations at sea. You can enjoy private cruises through the Carribbean for instance.

Book a spot on a cruise ship This choice is a great option for those who are looking to enjoy a sailing vacation without needing to do much of the planning themselves or even incur high costs. Cruises ships are the perfect option for single travellers, friends, couples as well as families. Be sure to check to see what?s included in the cost of the booing and what is not included in the cost of the booking.

Enjoying an educational sailing vacation Sailing vacations are a fantastic choice for those holiday makers looking to enjoy a sailing vacation in addition to learning how to sail. These educational vacations will make sure that guests are able to charter their own sailing vacation once they complete the curriculum planned.

A big part of preparing successful sailing vacations is deciding on the best kind of sailing vacation for you. You should spend some time thinking about what type of experience you are planning to have as well as exactly what level of sailing capabilities and skills you have prior to you making any final decision. It would also be smart to shop around and look for deals as well as packages that offer you good value for your money. Nevertheless, it is best to remember that the quality of the experience should never be sacrificed in order to save a some money.

OnLive Coming To Ouya Android Console - games - Furious Angels

Earlier this month, we discussed a Kickstarter project for Ouya, and Android-based gaming console in development by a company of the same name. Their fundraising campaign was wildly successful, and now they've partnered with cloud gaming provider OnLive for the console's launch. (Which is somewhat unexpected, because OnLive already sells its own pseudo-console.) In the same post, the Ouya creators showed their most recent design for the console's controllers.

Misconceptions about eating disorders | Diet-Fitness-Health-Healthy ...

I think the comparison between purging and self harming is accurate, personally? I find it extremely difficult to purge, so I end up self harming in response to the binge ? but if I could purge I would, its just that self harming at least fulfils the punishment side of things. As you have experience both purging and self harm do you think they do the same thing for you? How are they different?

Daniel P. Berrang? ? Blog Archive ? A review of the 1st London ...

Last night I attended the 1st London OpenStack Meetup, accompanied by fellow Red Hatters, Richard Morrell & Steve Hardy. The event was held in the ?Bluefin? building on the south bank of the Thames. Not co-incidentally, since they were organizing this event, this is the same building that Canonical recently moved into. From the meeting space, we were treated to fabulous views across London via the open air roof terrace, and were kept fed & watered with pizza & drinks. Perfect for the hot weather London is currently enjoying.

As well as being an opportunity to meet & greet other people involved/interested in OpenStack, there were 3 talks scheduled.? The presentation room had capacity for approx 100, and the attendees pretty much filled it ? probably 85-90 people attending at a guess.? There was a brief introduction / welcome from Mark Baker, then it was straight into the talks, nominally scheduled for 20 minutes a piece.

  • Dave Walker, from Canonical, gave an overall introduction to the OpenStack project, its goals, some background history, all its different components and thoughts for the future. This was at a good high level, to avoid scaring off the less technically minded people in the audience.
  • I was up next, to give a pretty technically focused presentation. The first half described libvirt, and what benefits it provides, over controlling KVM directly. The second half then looked at what libvirt does in the context of Nova, the improvements done for Folsom, and some personal ideas for things to do in Grizzly. If you enjoy looking at lists of bullet points, without any description, the PDF/ODP slides are available.
  • Phil Day, from HP, finished up with an overview of their experiences deploying OpenStack at a large scale & some of scalability problems they?ve hit. It was a mixture of good & bad news, along with useful tips for those deploying. As can be reasonably be expected at this stage in OpenStack?s lifetime, it sounds like there is scope for doing more work to improve ease of maintenance & deployment out of the box.

With the main talks out of the way, there was just time before the food & drinks, to have a 5 minute lightening talk by Steve Hardy on the subject of Heat API. This was a new project to me, and most people in the room. The gist of it, is that it provides an alternative to AWS CloudFormation, using a compatible template syntax & API, to enable easier migration off Amazon, to an OpenStack based cloud. The developers of Heat API are hoping to become an OpenStack Incubator project in the future, and have structured their code to fit in with all normal OpenStack coding practices.

The talks were all professionally video recorded by the technicians in the conference room we used, so I presume they will be published online somewhere in the not too distant future. Richard Morrell also took an audio recording of my talk, to be made available in podcast format soon.

Right at the start of the evening Mark Baker suggested we (the OpenStack London community) should aim to hold a second meetup in the September timeframe, even daring to go monthly after that. There was a call for other companies in the community willing/able to help out with the organization/funding for future meetups? ? basically finding a suitable meeting space for ~ 100 people, and providing food + drink. Of course future events will also rely on people volunteering to talk/present on interesting subjects related to OpenStack, to keep the potential audience entertained & informed. Given the success & enjoyment of the 1st meeting, I look forward to many interesting London OpenStack events in the future. Thanks to all the people involved in organizing this 1st event, to the other speakers for their time, and of course the audience for coming along to listen to us all!

Reid pushes for DHS to give Internet a cybersecurity pat down

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has urged his colleagues to vote this week?for a cybersecurity bill that would require power companies and utilities to comply with federal cybersecurity regulations.

Reid has prioritized the bill ? called the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 ? ?ahead of passing the defense budget, resulting in criticism from congressional Republicans.

A source with knowledge of the process said that Reid could bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote on Thursday.

There is incredible debate over whether government regulation of security standards is the right way to keep the nation?s critical networks safe from attack.

Many lawmakers and?President Barack Obama?fear?looming disaster and mass destruction should a computer virus cripple the networks of the nation?s power and utilities companies.

Supporters of federal regulation say the bill is needed because not every company vulnerable to an attack is taking the threat seriously. Many companies that operate critical infrastructure networks are not investing in network security, they argue, due to the lack of federal regulations, and others would wait until after they?ve been attacked.

Investment in security would increase network operators? costs, which is the reason why companies decline to upgrade security.

The bill does not require specific ?commercial? cybersecurity technologies, but gives federal agencies responsible for regulating critical infrastructure the power to ?adopt the cybersecurity practices as mandatory requirements.?

If an agency responsible for regulating critical infrastructure chooses not to make the cybersecurity practices mandatory, within one year the agency must report to Congress why it did not make the practices mandatory.

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain attacked?Reid during a speech on the Senate floor Monday for wanting to rush a bill that he called ?flawed,? and for placing the bill ahead of the defense budget, which he said also contained cybersecurity provisions.

While a new version of the bill released last Thursday is being branded as a compromise with Republicans by its sponsors, Republican opposition to the bill has been fierce, signaling that the new version is anything but a compromise in the eyes of its opponents.

Reid and bill sponsor Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, said they have less support than initially expected.

Reid defended his decision on Tuesday, but that same day The Heritage Foundation?s lobbying arm ?? Heritage Action ?threatened lawmakers that a vote in favor of the cybersecurity bill would count negatively on its yearly legislative scorecard.

?The federal government does not have a good track record of properly regulating industries without harm,? said?Heritage Action in a blog post Tuesday.

1000s of Chareidim Working Illegally - Yeshiva World News

According to a Channel 10 report, thousands of chareidim who have declared studying torah fulltime are in essence working illegally.

The report states that the chareidim who study fulltime maintain they are doing their part towards defending the country by learning torah, but in many cases, they are working illegally and simply avoiding military service.

Channel 10?s Dov Gilhar set up a sting operation, establishing a fictitious company called Ohel Avraham, advertising marketing positions in Bnei Brak. A man who left the chareidi fold was brought in to head the fake company, and he explained to avreichim who came in seeking work they need official papers since the job is ?on the books?. The cameras rolled behind the scenes, and one avreich is seen interviewing, explaining he cannot provide papers due to the army and that his last job was under the table.

He explained he received cash, and if reported, he would have issues with the IDF as well as tax authorities, not to mention losing lucrative state aid.

The report states that an avreich receives 800 NIS monthly, 1,040 NIS monthly in supplementary income and his kollel stipend. In addition, the state give tax breaks and discounts for kindergarten and other services.

Channel 10 concludes that many avreichim who learn have sufficient spare time to do other things, including a job. They quote an avreich for example who says he can work from 18:00 to midnight, while others explained they can work daytime hours as well.

Nine of the ten persons videoed displayed a proficient knowledge of duping the system, how to bypass the restriction of working and paying taxes.

This has been the reason many opposed the Tal Law, which provides an exemption from military service but also locks avreichim in, condemning them to a life of poverty because they are prohibited to work.

Recovering From Plastic Surgery the Right Way | General health

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Ace Abbey | Wednesday, 25 July 2012 12:08 | Word Count: 535

As with any other surgical procedure, plastic surgery requires a significant recovery time with many specific guidelines for the patient to follow. You'll want to plan to take time off of work, schedule friends and family to provide meals or do housework, and plan on nothing more than resting during the days immediately following your procedure. Once your doctor says it is okay, you can slowly ease back into your daily routine.

Here are some common tips to follow during your recovery:

Plan to regularly apply ice to your surgical site. Your doctor will let you know how often to put an ice pack on the site and how long to leave it there. You'll want to have plenty of ice in your freezer or several store-bought ice packs waiting in the freezer.

Adjust your schedule to accommodate plenty of recovery time. Your surgeon can advise you on how much time you should take off work. It's best to take as much time as possible up front since you can always come back early if you recover faster than you originally thought! In addition to taking time off work, you'll want to adjust family and social engagements in order to accommodate the rest you'll need.

You should arrange to have a friend or family member stay with you during the first 48 to 72 hours following surgery. Even though you may feel up to performing your normal activities, it's best to take it easy and let someone else handle the housework for a few days as your body recovers.

While you sleep or rest, you should keep your head and neck elevated to avoid unnecessary swelling. Keep your head and shoulders propped up on pillows as you sleep or recline both during the day and at night.

Plastic surgery places extra strain on your body, so you'll want to take it easy on activity and diet. Your body often loses fluid during surgery and recovery, so rehydrate it often by drinking plenty of water. You'll also want to plan on light meals during the first couple days of recovery. Choose foods that are easy for you to swallow and for your body to digest.

Avoid going out into the sun. If you must go out, use a sunblock with plenty of UV protection.

Don't take aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medication until your doctor says it's okay. Your surgeon will provide you with prescription pain relievers and other medications that are designed to work well together. Some over-the-counter medications may interfere with these prescriptions and cause problems that can make your recovery time longer. Before your plastic surgery, your doctor will also evaluate current prescription medications you may be taking for other medical conditions. He'll let you know which ones are safe to continue during recovery.

Expect to look worse immediately after your plastic surgery! You're body's recovering from being cut and adjusted, so your face will swell and bruise as it recovers. Don't allow yourself to get discouraged. Once these natural physical reactions subside, you'll be able to enjoy your new and beautiful face!

After plastic surgery Riverside?patients need a helpful doctor to guide them through recovery. To find a quality professional who can help you through the entire process, visit?http://www.renuance.net.

(AP) ? The 74-year-old mother of Hall of Fame infielder Cal Ripken was safe Wednesday, a day after an armed man abducted her from her home northeast of Baltimore, police said.

Vi Ripken was kidnapped between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday by a man who forced her into her car, according to Aberdeen police. She was found about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday unharmed in her car near her home in Aberdeen, some 25 miles from Baltimore.

Ripken earned the nickname "Iron Man" for playing in 2,632 consecutive games during his 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and is a hero to many baseball fans. His brother, Bill, also played second base in the major leagues. The two were managed for a time on the Orioles by their father, Cal Ripken Sr., who died in 1999.

Vi Ripken described her abductor as a tall, thin white man with glasses, but police spokesman Lt. Fred Budnick had no other details.

The FBI and Maryland State Police were also involved in the investigation.

FBI spokesman Rich Wolf said authorities don't know whether the abductor knew the Ripken family or what, if any, demands might have been made.

"Maybe they can come up with a motivation based on the actions of the guy," Wolf said.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the Ripken family said in a statement. "We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly."

The family said that it could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

Identifying the arrogant boss

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Arrogant bosses can drain the bottom line because they are typically poor performers who cover up their insecurities by disparaging subordinates, leading to organizational dysfunction and employee turnover.

A new measure of arrogance, developed by researchers at The University of Akron and Michigan State University, can help organizations identify arrogant managers before they have a costly and damaging impact.

The Workplace Arrogance Scale (WARS) will be presented at the American Psychological Association convention in Orlando on Aug. 2 by industrial and organizational psychologist and professor Stanley Silverman, dean of UA's Summit College and University College.

What is arrogance covering up?

Arrogance is characterized by a pattern of behavior that demeans others in an attempt to prove competence and superiority. Silverman says this behavior is correlated with lower intelligence scores and lower self-esteem when compared to managers who are not arrogant.

"Does your boss demonstrate different behaviors with subordinates and supervisors?" Silverman asks. He says a "yes" answer could mean trouble. Silverman warns that "yes" replies to these other questions raise red flags and signal arrogance.

  • Does your boss put his/her personal agenda ahead of the organization's agenda?
  • Does the boss discredit others' ideas during meetings and often make them look bad?
  • Does your boss reject constructive feedback?
  • Does the boss exaggerate his/her superiority and make others feel inferior?

Silverman and his colleagues Russell Johnson, assistant professor of management at the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, and Nicole McConnell and Alison Carr, both Ph.D. students in The University of Akron's Industrial and Organizational Psychology program, published details of the Workplace Arrogance Scale in the July 2012 issue of The Industrial-Organizational Psychologist.

Effect on morale

Left unchecked, arrogant leaders can be a destructive force within an organization, notes Silverman. With power over their employees' work assignments, promotion opportunities and performance reviews, arrogant bosses put subordinates in a helpless position. They do not mentor junior colleagues nor do they motivate a team to benefit the organization as a whole, contributing to a negative social workplace atmosphere.

Silverman says that arrogance is less a personality trait than a series of behaviors, which can be addressed through coaching if the arrogant boss is willing to change. He recommends that organizations incorporate an assessment of arrogance into the employee review and performance management process.

Silverman emphasizes that cultivating humility among leaders and promoting a learning-oriented work climate go far in reducing arrogance and increasing productive leadership and employee social interaction.

Market Information Services via radio ? guest post | techfortrade.org

This is the second summer guest post; this time from Tom Owen.

The World Wide Web Foundation innovative approach to Market Information via Radio

The World Wide Web Foundation has implemented some interesting initiatives aimed at making the web both useful and accessible for farmers in rural Africa. ?While undertaking research in the Sahel region of West Africa, the Foundation discovered a few key points.? One is that there is a lack of information on the Web that is relevant to the needs of farmers in the Sahel.? A second key learning is that most rural dwellers aren?t using SMS for communicating and gathering information; rather the phone is mostly used for voice communications.? It was also found that community radio was a popular method of communication in rural areas.

With these lessons as a starting point the Web Foundation, working with Mali based organisation Sahel Eco, set out to develop voice based technologies that can help break down barriers preventing farmers from connecting with potential buyers for their goods.? As the first part of a multi pronged Market Information System initiative the Web Foundation has developed a voice-based toolkit that allows community radio stations to easily broadcast locally relevant market information.

While many Market Information Systems (MIS) and trading platforms for agricultural goods are based on textual information transmitted via mobile phone, the Web Foundation is using mobile phones in a different way, as a voice based data entry mechanism as well as a tool to disseminate information to community radio stations.

The service is called Radio March?. Farmers can call in to a hotline number to list goods for sale, these listings are then aggregated into a single audio file by Sahel Eco that can be disseminated to community radio stations.? The community radio stations can download the audio file to a computer or mobile phone in cases where internet or mobile broadband is available.? In the case that a community radio station has no data access they can call in and play the audio feed directly from a mobile phone.? The system is accessible regardless of the connectivity of the radio station.? This approach also allows farmers who are illiterate or uncomfortable with using SMS to easily list goods for sale.

The Web Foundation is using the pilot to promote an ICT, community radio, and a communication medium, voice, that is often overlooked in agricultural initiatives that use ICTs to support smallholder farmers.? It?s a great example that shows voice based services are an acceptable and indeed in many cases a preferable communication method for ICT based farmer services.

Perhaps most importantly this pilot serves as a platform for the Web Foundation to develop and disseminate voice based technologies that can be easily adapted for use by other initiatives.? While SMS and smart phone apps have been the poster children for ICT based initiatives in agriculture, this pilot project will hopefully bring increased awareness to the potential of voice based technologies such as interactive voice response.? It?s also important to note there isn?t a significant cost premium to implement voice based services (in comparison with text based SMS systems).? SMS is most common because it?s the path of least resistance for developers, not because it necessarily costs less.

The Web Foundation sees voice based services as part of a larger ecosystem for facilitating agricultural trade.? While Voice services are an important link that can directly connect producers and buyers, there is also value in providing web-based services which are more suited to aggregating supply or demand (i.e. to facilitate bulk sales for larger buyers).? There is also an opportunity for other actors to connect existing MIS to community radio stations, extending the reach of their services.

While textual interfaces based on SMS or smart phone apps have been touted as the future of MIS and trading platforms, the Web Foundation has shown that community radio and voice based systems have will have a big role to play in connecting farmers to markets.

Real Relationships with Rachael-Lea: Online dating and other tech ...

By Racheal-Lee Rickards

I met him online. Like many others who are tired of the nightclub scene, I was told online dating was a great way to meet someone. I came up with a smart name, a recent photo and jumped in to join the millions of singles looking for a connection.

After weeding through the men who put up pictures of Brian McKnight, and the crazy old men who hunt deer for a living and somehow think they may have something in common with an urban chick, I came upon him. He looked normal, didn?t seem like he?d have any weird stuff in his freezer, and was cute enough. He responded and we took our conversation from online to text. Problem was, in between exchanging one too many smiley faces, I had failed to realize that I signed up for a text relationship.

Do you remember what dating used to be like when you actually had to rely on hearing a person?s voice at the other end of the line? When laughing out loud was actually laughing out loud? Between Twitter, Facebook and PlentyofFreaks.com, um, I mean, PlentyofFish.com, something?s gone terribly wrong. I have to admit, I?ve been part of the problem. When we sat across from each other at dinner, phones on the table, in between laughter and bites of food, we busily responded to the call of an incoming text or Twitter status update.

Call me old school, but I miss running home, hoping that ?he? had called and left a message on my answering machine?not?voicemail, answering machine. I remember the feeling of seeing that flashing message light and anxiously pressing play. If you?re anything like me, you would?ve held onto that message and replayed it until you accidentally erased it. Later that night, you had a reason to put on your control-top pantyhose, get dressed and curl your hair. Late-night conversations involved?whispers?not Wi-Fi. Dating was a whole lot sexier! And while communication was less convenient back then, conversations felt warm, talking had deeper meaning and a kiss goodnight was not a set of lips sent via text.

To make things worse, the majority of men online don?t seem to be taking it too seriously. A guy friend of mine recently told me, ?Online dating is really only good for one thing. We don?t go on there to meet Miss Right, we go on there to find the woman who will be right for tonight.? He then added, ?We can go online, meet a girl, and tell her to bring over a bottle of wine and her own condoms. I feel sorry for you good girls. There are far too many women giving it up easy. And while all men want a good woman, sometimes the path of least resistance is the easiest way to go.? Yes, that?s right, ladies. There are plenty of women who will put out without even the thought of a second date and ruin it for the rest of us who are looking for a little more than a temporary warm body beside us.

Needless to say, my account is closed. Now, I?m campaigning for others to do the same. Stop scrolling through the list of men who want to chat via web cam and find someone who wants to sit down and have a real conversation. Get out and meet someone the old fashioned way.? It?s time to go back to the basics!

Town Board Gets Earful On Frank's Sports Dome Plan ...

In a sometimes-raucous meeting with Greenburgh officials, residents had their say Thursday on plans for an athletic complex on the spot where Frank?s Nursery once stood.

Meeting at the site for more than 90 minutes, some 100 residents vigorously debated?with the officials as well as each other?whether to lease town-owned property on Dobbs Ferry Road to a private sports-management company. In return for a 15-year lease?at annual rents starting at $260,000 and running to $335,000 after 10 years?Tarrytown-based Game On 365 LLC would be allowed to erect an 80-foot-high, $6.9 million domed athletic complex.

Residents will have one more chance to be heard next Wednesday (July 25) when the full town board will meet an hour early, at 6:30 p.m., to hear final comments before voting on the proposal. They expect to vote on Friday.?

Town Supervisor Paul Feiner is pushing the lease proposal. ?We want to preserve the town?s right to use this property in the future,? he said. ?If we sell it, we don?t have that option any more.?

A formal request for proposals posted on the town?s website and distributed to residents attracted only three bids?including two from would-be buyers. The lone lease proposal was Game On?s sports bubble, which has encountered stiff resistance.

Both supporters and opponents of the plan were on hand Thursday, most of them standing in the onetime nursery?s parking lot as daylight faded to dusk and finally darkness. Critics clearly had a vocal edge, frequently and noisily interrupting presentations by Feiner, Town Attorney Timothy W. Lewis and Assessor Edye McCarthy. Largely skeptical, the residents questioned, among other things, the aesthetics of the proposed complex, how much traffic it would generate and how big a payday the town could expect.

Greenburgh seized the abandoned property, almost seven acres near the Sprain Brook Parkway, more than a year ago for unpaid back taxes. Given the option to sell or lease the land or turn it to town purposes, Feiner embraced the Game On proposal, arguing that the potential for almost $5 million in rental income over five years trumped any sale of the property in today?s depressed real estate market.

But critics like Simon Cohen insist the town is being shortchanged in the deal. In the first year, for example, Greenburgh will collect $260,000 in rent while its tenant, Game On, expects to pocket $300,000 to $330,000 by subletting 7,500 square feet of its space to five retail tenants, Cohen said.

On a website? helpburstthebubble.com?Cohen also asserts that by leasing out the land Greenburgh would surrender an opportunity to collect property taxes on the land instead of paying them. Before Frank?s closed up shop in 2004, Cohen notes, the site had generated about $240,000 in property taxes annually, compared with about $50,000 the town now pays on the idle acreage.

The town assessor, McCarthy, told the crowd that Frank?s had been appealing its quarter-million-dollar assessment when it folded. While the tax certiorari never was resolved, McCarthy acknowledged the nursery had been ?overpaying? its taxes. ?So for those of you who are using that [tax bill] for a comparison, that is inaccurate,? she said.

She roughly estimated Game On?s ?taxes??which would be paid as part of its annual rental?at about $100,000 to $125,000.

A feisty, at times testy, crowd began gathering well before the meeting?s scheduled 7 p.m. start. Near the doorstep that once welcomed customers to Frank?s extensive crafts and garden shop, residents filled many but not all of the 48 folding chairs that had been set out. Others in attendance, the majority, stood in a broad arc behind the chairs.

Seated or standing, many felt free to speak?often spontaneously, sometimes simultaneously?to both the assembled clutch of town and Game On officials as well as each other. At one point, frustrated by the crowd?s seeming inability to explore topics fully before skipping to a new subject, Jeri Waldman of Greenburgh left her seat and took the officials? microphone. She urged residents to focus on one issue to conclusion, winning an ovation if not much change in the pattern of debate.?

The proposed air-supported structure, or dome, would host 80,000 square feet of artificial turf fields for soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball and field hockey along with a three-lane indoor track and some hard-court surfaces.?In response to a question,?Game On?s project manager, Martin Hewitt, said the bubble would?rise to a top height of 80 feet. He was less specific about the time the facility would be open. ?We don?t have set hours yet,? he said, suggesting only that youngsters would likely be the principal users from mid-morning or after school to mid-evening, with adults closing the dome at about 10.

While critics were the most vocal Thursday, supporters of the plan also spoke up. Lucille M. Conklin, who scrambles to find playing sites as president of the Westchester Women?s Soccer League, endorsed the dome. ?We play soccer year-round . . . and we are locked out of a lot of fields [for residency and other requirements],? she said.?

On the flip side, however, a woman who would not give her name but who was part of several energetic exchanges asked, ?Why are we not voting [on the lease proposal]? This is our neighborhood. We pay taxes.?

Feiner said he agreed. ?I feel very strongly that the public should have the opportunity to vote on it,? he said. But on a proposal like the dome, he continued, state law ?expressly prohibits a vote by the public.?

?For many years,? Feiner said, ?I?ve been pushing the New York State Legislature for [broader use of] referendums and initiatives.? Still, he said of Thursday?s gathering, ?I?ve always liked these outdoor outreach meetings.?
