HTC One X Training Doc Reveals Some Slight Bias When Compared To The Galaxy S III

As the launch of the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III?nears, it seems Sammy?s competitors are?circling?the wagons in an attempt to kill some of the buzz. ?While Apple has?(once again)?taken the litigious route, HTC has decided to put the HTC One X up against the Galaxy S III spec for spec while putting some?uh?creative spin on things. ?These blurry images of some training materials provided by HTC to sales reps show desired responses that range from decently?accurate?(like the One S, the camera on the HTC One X is amazing) to downright silly, like?how they try to spin the lack of removable storage and battery as a?positive:

The good news is that a customer choosing between the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S III really can?t lose, both are fantastic phones in their own right. ?Much has been said about the design of the Galaxy S III, but the design seems to be growing on people as all indications show strong demand both in the US and abroad. ?HTC, despite showing decent numbers and demand for the One X?has had a rough 1st quarter, and is certainly keen to turn things around. ?Click on through to the source for a few more photos.

Helicopter missing in Peru with 13 foreigners

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? A helicopter carrying 14 passengers, most of them from South Korea, was missing in Peru's highland and snowfall was impeding efforts to reach the rugged terrain where the aircraft's emergency beacon indicated it was located, authorities said Thursday.

The last communication with the helicopter owned by Cuzco-based Helicusco was late Wednesday afternoon as it headed for Cuzco from the town of Mazuco in neighboring Madre de Dios state, said police Gen. Hector Dulanto.

The helicopter was carrying 11 South Koreans, two Austrians and a Peruvian passenger in addition to an undetermined number of crewmembers, he said.

The chopper was flying near Huallahualla, a town located at about 13,200 feet (4,000 meters) when communications were lost, said Dulanto, who was in charge of rescue operations.

The Interior Ministry said later in a statement that the helicopter's distress beacon indicated it was near a peak called Apu Colque Cruz in Cusco's Quispicanchi province.

A police helicopter tried to search for the aircraft but had to turn back, said Dulanto.

Helicusco issued a brief statement saying "operations on the ground with the search brigade have been going on since yesterday but it has not yet been possible to locate the helicopter." It did not identify the type of aircraft that was missing.

An official at the Korean Embassy in Lima said those aboard were not tourists, but were involved in commercial operations.

The official, Kristel Velez, said no more information was immediately available but that two embassy officials had traveled to Cuzco.

South Korean media quoted a foreign ministry official saying the passengers could not be contacted through their mobile phones but there was no automatic signal indicating a crash either.

The Yonhap report did not name the official.

Twenty hours after news broke that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are getting married, the singer was spotted leaving Los Angeles on Thursday to reportedly jet off to visit her fiancé on the Louisiana set of his new movie, "Empire State."

It's not the first public outing for Miley since she announced she and her boyfriend of three years plan to marry. On Wednesday, she was spotted in Malibu wearing her new bling at a photo shoot and walking around the beachside town with her mom, Tish, according to the Mirror.

Sources told Radar Online that her parents are hoping she and Liam will wait a bit to get married, but other sources tell UsMagazine.com that despite her young age, she's ready to make some very adult moves in her life.

"She's very mature! She's 19 going on 40, so she is ready for [marriage]. Liam likes her wild side, but Miley's also mature and supportive. They're both ready for this," the source said, adding that as for wedding plans, "Nothing yet [is planned], but she's starting to work on it!"

Meanwhile, insiders tell People.com that "she's pretty independent already." The source added, "They're just so happy she's found someone who makes her so happy. Billy Ray loves Liam. He's happy his daughter has found the right guy. The whole family loves Liam."

Hemsworth popped the question on May 31 after three years of dating. He asked with a 3.5-carat Neil Lane sparkler.

Miley is taking some time out of recording her next album to visit Hemsworth. According to sources, that album will reflect her more mature state of mind. Recording with the likes of Pharrell and Hit-Boy, the insider shared, "We are watching a young girl turn into a young woman."

Consolidated suit expected in NFL concussion case

(AP) ? Lawyers for former NFL players plan to file a single lawsuit Thursday consolidating scores of complaints brought against the league in the past year accusing the NFL of concealing information linking football-related head injuries to permanent neurological problems.

Plaintiffs lawyers say more than 80 pending lawsuits are consolidated in the "master complaint" being filed in Philadelphia. They involve thousands of retired players.

A federal judicial panel has consolidated the cases before U.S. District Judge Anita Brody. The lawsuits aim to hold the NFL responsible for medical monitoring and treatment of the veteran players.

The plaintiffs include Mary Ann Easterling, the widow of former Atlanta Falcons safety Roy Easterling. The complaint comes less than two months after the 62-year-old Easterling shot himself at their Richmond, Va., home.

An NFL spokesman did not immediately return messages Wednesday. The league has vehemently denied the accusations in the lawsuits in the past.

The problem of concussions in the NFL has moved steadily into a litigation phase for about a year.

According to an AP review of 81 lawsuits filed through May 25, the plaintiffs include 2,138 players who say the NFL did not do enough to inform them about the dangers of head injuries. The total number of plaintiffs in those cases is 3,356, which includes players, spouses and other relatives or representatives.

Some of the plaintiffs are named in more than one complaint, but the AP count does not include duplicated names in the total.

Indiegogo Raises $15 Million Series A To Make Crowdfunding Go Mainstream

Screen Shot 2012-06-06 at 12.25.57 AMIndiegogo, the website that allows people to contribute money to the causes, artistic projects, and small companies they support, has attracted a good amount of success in the four years since it was founded in early 2008. In the process, it's even helped to put the concept of "crowdfunding" into the mainstream. But Indiegogo is officially making it clear that it's aiming to make an even bigger impact -- and the company has closed on $15 million in funding to do so.

Clemens loses bid to have Issa testify in trial

(AP) ? U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton almost made it sound like he was doing Roger Clemens' lawyers a favor when he ruled that they can't call Rep. Darrell Issa as a witness.

Issa "might bury your client," Walton warned Clemens' lawyers. "If I was in your all shoes, I would be very loath to call him."

And they won't get that chance after Walton's ruling Monday.

Issa, a California Republican, is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the panel that Clemens allegedly lied to in 2008 when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Issa wasn't chairman at the time, and he had criticized the committee for holding the hearing on drugs in baseball. Defense lawyers hoped his testimony would help call into question the hearing's legitimacy and sent a subpoena to the committee to try to compel his appearance as a witness.

Walton said defense lawyers would be making a "death wish" in calling Issa, after prosecutor Steve Durham pointed out the congressman's comment after the 2008 hearing that he didn't doubt that Clemens had perjured himself.

Lawyers for the committee had filed a motion to quash the subpoena. They said Issa's appearance at the trial should be barred under the Constitution's speech or debate clause, which protects elected officials from being questioned in a lawsuit about their legislative work.

In granting that motion, Walton said he didn't have to invoke the speech or debate clause. He said that relying on Issa to make comments criticizing the hearing again on the stand amounted to speculation. The judge said that if he did allow Issa to testify, he would have to let the government call other lawmakers who supported the hearing ? dragging out the trial that's already in its eighth week.

"You'd end up with a swearing match," Walton said.

Clemens lawyers were more interested in Issa because of his comments as a rank-and-file member of the committee in 2008 than because of his current post as chairman. Defense filings noted that back then, Issa was quoted as saying the hearings smacked of the tactics of the infamous former Sen. Joseph McCarthy, who hauled people before his committee looking for Communists.

Clemens was not in the courtroom for Monday's motions hearing.

The jury returns to the case on Tuesday, when the Clemens team continues to put on its defense. The next half-dozen witnesses it plans to call are Baltimore baseball announcer Joe Angel; Terrence Boos, a Drug Enforcement Administration chemist who testified for the government last month; former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Boddicker; former New York Yankees massage therapist Rohan Baichu; forensic toxicologist Bruce Goldberger and DNA expert Marc Taylor.

Homeschooling by Holly Scheer - Steadfast Lutherans

This article comes from Holly Scheer, the wife of Pastor Scheer, who has the task of teaching their children at home.

It?s hard to completely pin down the numbers because some states don?t track homeschoolers at all, but estimates are that in 2007 (the most recent year data is available from ) there were roughly 1.5 million homeschoolers. ?http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=91 and that homeschooling increases by about 7% per year.

Why do people homeschool? ?It?s really individual by family, but some of the most common reasons are academics, religion, addressing special needs or giftedness, bullying, family schedules, and safety.

What does this mean for us, as Lutherans? ?It means the face of education, something our Synod has traditionally been really focused on, is rapidly and radically shifting. ?Our Synod grew on schools, really, really good schools. ?Why are Lutherans choosing homeschooling, sometimes in communities with schools? ?What?s the deal?

Let?s look at the common reasons for homeschooling and how that touches our schools.

Academics. ?This is a touchy subject in our country. ?We, as a nation, keep lagging in test scores compared to the rest of the world and it doesn?t seem to be getting better. ?It?s a difficult and complicated issue and ideas on why and solutions really vary.

Homeschoolers currently on tests massively outperform their publically, and privately, schooled peers. ?http://www.hslda.org/

This is true across financial and racial lines. ?Some of our parochial schools have amazing test scores, too. ?Some don?t. ?Shrinking schools with budget problems and high turnover can have a difficult time with addressing the academic needs of their student body. ?More and more parochial schools linger on the edge of closing. ?We have far fewer LCMS day schools than we did forty years ago.

Religion. ?Homeschooling allows parents to have total control over the religious life of their kids. ?In a time when there is such polarization of science and history homeschooling allows parents to teach their kids their values. ?This is also a strength found in most of our parochial schools.

Special needs and gifted kids. ?You don?t get much more specialized education than a child having school specifically tailored to them at home. ?It?s hard with budget issues and shrinking services to meet the specific and often very individual needs of the kids at the very top of the class as well as those needing extra support. ?Kids with behavior problems are another common group that leave schools.

Bullying. ?This is a terrible problem that has long lasting repercussions for kids. ?It?s not rare to see news stories of kids, some of them tragically young, who commit suicide or acts of violence at school as a result of bullying. ?This is a problem that I don?t have the answer for.

Schedules. ?Some of us have goofy schedules. ?With my husband being a pastor he doesn?t keep a standard 9 to 5 work day. ?He sees the kids at lunch, but not always for supper. ?He can go to the plethora of night time meetings our congregation needs without feeling like he hasn?t seen our kids.

Safety. ?It?s an unfortunate reality that in some places schools aren?t safe. ?Drugs and violence are around. ?That?s scary to think of when it?s your kids.
Am I saying that homeschooling is some magical panacea that solves all? ?For all people?

No.

Homeschooling ?is a choice that works for some families and I totally support families in the choices that are best for them. ?I?m glad to see MORE choices opening up for people, not fewer.

Is there a way that homeschoolers and our LCMS schools can work together? ?Some schools have had good success with opening classes to homeschoolers and letting them in on a part time basis. ?There are some things that are better in a group.

You?ll notice about this article that I didn?t address socialization.? It?s a common complaint and worry about homeschoolers from people that do not do it. ?Here?s why ? as a homeschooler I have more than enough activities for my kids through church and community, as well as our local homeschool group. ?People often are quick to point out the weird, unsocialized homeschooler they met somewhere. ?I?ll take this moment to remind you that some people have a hard time fitting in public or private school as well.

Homeschooling is going to continue to grow from all available signs. ?Will we embrace it as a Synod, all work together, and come out with something better, for everyone?

We're more intrigued by the unabashed "Voice" rip-off "The Choice," which sees celebrities such as DJ Pauly D, Romeo, Jeremy Bloom and Jason Cook take to the spinning chairs to choose attractive singles to take on a date, sight unseen. Located 45 miles south of New Orleans, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office investigates thousands of incidents every year. With the fiery personalities of the local Cajuns and the Louisiana justice system unlike any other (it's the only state that is ruled under Napoleonic law), there's no such thing as an ordinary police call. Whether it's a creepy sighting of the Rougarou ("shape-shifting swamp monster"), a distressed neighbor reporting a stolen air conditioner during a heat wave, or a lead on a gruesome local serial-killer case; the deeper into the sticky swampland the deputies delve, the stranger and more mysterious the calls become.

  • Fri., June 8: "Lives on Fire"
